MAR 02.02.2021

On Tuesday, February 2nd, the 2020/21 January transfer window closed for business. Below is a compilation of some of the most noteworthy comings and goings in LaLiga Santander.

Getafe CF have signed more players than any other club, bringing in Kubo, Aleña and Sofian Chakla on loan, from Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, and Villarreal CF respectively. They are sure to be great additions to the team and have already featured for different LaLiga Santander outfits in recent years.

Another club that have significantly bolstered their squad are RC Celta, who have recruited Aaron Martin, Augusto Solari and Facundo Ferreyra. Aaron, who is a left-back by trade, played for RCD Espanyol in the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons and following a spell at German club Mainz has returned to LaLiga Santander on loan. As for Solari, he has signed for Os Celestes from Racing Club de Avellaneda and will be making his bow in LaLiga Santander, tasked with improving Celta’s league position.  Thirdly, Argentine forward Ferreyra has joined from SL Benfica to reinforce the Galicians’ attack.

Atletico Madrid have also been active in this January transfer window, adding Moussa Dembele to their ranks. The Frenchman has come in on loan from Olympique de Lyon, with the aim of providing Los Rojiblancos with firepower and keeping them at the top of the league in what will be his maiden experience in LaLiga Santander. In turn, Atletico have sent Ivan Saponjic on loan to Cadiz CF, where he will play until the end of the season. The 23-year-old Serbian striker is seeking more playing time than he was able to get while in the Spanish capital.

Two other footballers who have opted to try their luck in other teams but without leaving LaLiga Santander are Carlos Fernandez and Kenan Kodro. The Sevilla striker is one of the most exciting additions to Real Sociedad’s squad and is eager to get more minutes yet under his belt and fire in some goals. As for Kodro, the Bosnian has left Athletic Club and gone on loan to R. Valladolid until the end of the season.

This January window has also seen players such as Aleix Garcia, Johan Mojica and Cristiano Piccini return to LaLiga Santander. Free agent Aleix Garcia has moved to SD Eibar after rescinding his contract with Dinamo Bucharest. A Villarreal CF academy product, the Catalan midfielder also made his LaLiga Santander bow at the club, as well as playing for Girona FC over two top flight campaigns. Meanwhile, another ex-Girona player has signed for Elche FC, with Mojica recruited by Els Ilicitans with the brief of helping the club avoid relegation. Mojica had previously starred in LaLiga Santander for Rayo Vallecano and in LaLiga SmartBank for R.Valladolid.

Another familiar face back in Spain is Cristiano Piccini, who has returned to Valencia CF after terminating his contract with Atalanta B.C. The Italian right-back is hoping to have a successful second spell in LaLiga Santander with Los Che, and knows the ins and outs of the competition having played for three seasons at Real Betis.

One of the most striking signings is Sevilla FC’s acquisition of Alejandro ‘Papu' Gomez from Atalanta. The Argentine forward has never played in LaLiga Santander but is keen to carry on finding the net in Spain, having recently reached the milestone of 100 club career goals. Also coming in from abroad who had not previously featured in Spanish football is Etienne Capoue. The 32-year-old has joined Villarreal CF from Watford F.C., and commented at his unveiling that he hopes to 'help the team in any way he can'. Finally, in another last-minute transfer dealing Lucas Olaza has left RC Celta to join R. Valladolid.
