A whole seven matchdays Barcelona B had to wait. But where better to finally secure a win than at the home of La Liga Adelante leaders Girona FC, and with a great goal from their Croatian midfielder Alen Halilović. The 1-0 victory, on Matchday 16, propelled the Azulgrana out of the relegation zone.
In the first half the keepers were the busiest men on the pitch. Adrián Ortolá stopped a quick succession of shots from Fran Sandaza, Álex Granell an even winger Florian Lejeune, who made a bold break infield to test the keeper. Isaac Becerra carried out similar heroics in the Barcelona B goal, in particular with his outstanding save from a Sandro Ramírez free kick.
The goal came early in the second half, ultimately a simple one for Halilović, and against the run of play. Girona had been in the ascendant, but then Halilović latched onto a long ball from the Barca B keeper, finishing from long distance with a sweet left foot shot. It remained 1-0 until the final whistle, though Girona perhaps deserved more out of the match for their intensity and commitment to attack. As it was, the home side forfeited their position at the top of the table.
