SÁB 20.05.2017

This Atletico Madrid Women side just keep on making history. After last term's exploits, when they featured in the Women's Champions League for the first time and clinched their first major piece of silverware by capturing the Copa de la Reina, they have broken even more new ground this season, claiming their maiden Liga Iberdrola title and going unbeaten for the entire campaign along the way.

Thirty matches played, 30 games without defeat. That is the phenomenal record that the Atletico ladies have put together in the 2016/17 Liga Iberdrola. Indeed, only Zaragoza CFF, Granadilla Egatesa, FC Barcelona and Athletic Club (all once), and Valencia CF (twice), proved capable of taking any points off Angel Villacampa's charges, with these six fixtures ending in draws and Las Rojiblancas winning their other 24 encounters.
Despite a run of form that had already made this their best season ever, including crucially overcoming Barcelona 2-1 at the Vicente Calderon, Atletico did not have the title in the bag going into the final matchday. Their fate was in their hands ahead of kick-off, but they knew that they needed to beat Real Sociedad to be sure of being crowned champions. They did just that, getting over the line in style with a 2-1 victory – although, as it happens, they could have afforded to stumble, with Barça succumbing to Levante UD by the same scoreline.
