Alternating possession
A win for Athletic Club would mathematically secure them a place in Europe next season. Victory for Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, would keep them in the thick of the fight for the Liga BBVA title. We were promised a thrilling game in Bilbao, and events out on the pitch did not disappoint, with both Athletic and Atletico having their chances and both teams enjoying spells of possession.
Godin goes off injured
The bad news in the match revolved around the Rojiblancos defender. Diego Godin was unable to carry on and had to abandon the field of play just 10 minutes in, representing a significant loss for the Madrid outfit. Lucas Hernandez came on in place of the Uruguayan.
Torres goal
Fernando Torres ended up being the man to make his mark on the first half at San Mames. Koke and Antoine Griezmann linked up on the edge of the area and the Frenchman picked out the Madrid-born striker perfectly. Torres headed home Griezmann's superb cross, putting the ball past Gorka Iraizoz to make it 1-0 to the visitors at half-time. His goal made it four consecutive games on the scoresheet for the Atleti number 9.
Athletic fight-back goes unrewarded
The Basque side stepped things up a gear when they headed back out after the break. They pressed hard, constantly creating a threat and forcing Jan Oblak into action on more than one occasion. However, the keeper was a rock between the posts and managed to maintain his clean sheet through to the final whistle. The Atletico defence also positioned themselves perfectly and had no problems dealing with Athletic's domination.
The Liga BBVA title race
Atletico remain in the title fight thanks to Torres's goal. The three points earned at San Mames put Diego Pablo Simeone's side on a total of 79 points and keep them level with Barcelona, who won 8-0 at Riazor.
