Torres, quick out of the blocks
Fernando Torres has developed a taste for scoring in the Liga BBVA. After netting his 100th Atletico goal against SD Eibar, he followed it up by netting number 101 with an early strike against Getafe. After just two minutes, the forward picked up a great pass in from the left courtesy of Yannick Carrasco, who would soon be forced to retire injured, and stabbed it in from close range to open the scoring. He then had another golden opportunity to make it 2-0 for the visitors but wasted a long ball from Gabi, firing it wide of Vicente Guaita's goal.
Atletico come out fighting
Intensity was once again the name of the game for the Rojiblancos, their determination clear from the off. Atletico came out with firing on all cylinders leaving Fran Escribá's men nowhere to hide. Simeone's side had the best of the first half until Getafe woke up and took control in the second.
A valiant Getafe
With Alvaro Vazquez leading the line for the Azulones, Atletico's defence were forced to dig deep as Getafe grew in stature. Getafe unsettled the visitors by the end of the first half with Pablo Sarabia posing the greatest threat to Jan Oblak's goal.
Scepovic: Plan B
Despite the locals' best efforts, they were unable to find the back of the net and coach Fran Escriba decided to up the ante by sending in Stefan Scepovic to add extra punch in attack. The Serbian came on for Alvaro Vazquez, making life difficult for the Rojiblancos defenders but, despite the centre-forward's height, Getafe failed to get the equaliser.
Nine away games with a clean sheet
The 1-0 win saw Atletico rack up their ninth game on the road without conceding a goal. A statistic that reflects Oblak's solid current form and the work put in by Simeone's back line. The victory gave them three points to hang onto second spot in the Liga BBVA table, with Real Madrid hot on their heels. Getafe stayed on 26 points, lying thirteenth in the standings.
