DOM 25.08.2024

The second matchday of the 2024/25 LALIGA EA SPORTS season took place over the weekend and the main headlines are outlined below, along with the latest transfer news from Spanish football’s top division.

RC Celta and FC Barcelona are the only teams with 100 percent records

After two rounds of the 2024/25 LALIGA EA SPORTS season, RC Celta and FC Barcelona are the only two teams to have collected six points out of six. They defeated Valencia CF and Athletic Club, respectively, in Matchday 2 to keep up their perfect starts. For there to be just two teams left with 100 percent records after two matchdays underlines the competitiveness of the competition.

Only two teams have zero points

While there are just two sides with 100 percent records at the top of the standings, there are only two clubs with zero points from the first two matchdays if we look at the bottom end of the table. Valencia CF and RCD Espanyol have lost both of their matches so far, but every other club already has at least one point on the board.

CA Osasuna send former coach Arrasate home defeated

One of the Matchday 2 fixtures that was circled in red was CA Osasuna vs RCD Mallorca, since this was Jagoba Arrasate’s return to El Sadar to face the club he just departed after six years in charge. It wasn’t a happy homecoming for Arrasate in Pamplona, as a Rubén García goal earned Los Rojillos and new coach Vicente Moreno a 1-0 victory.

Real Madrid ease to victory in their home opener

Reigning champions Real Madrid secured their first win of the new LALIGA EA SPORTS season in Matchday 2, when they hosted Real Valladolid. Los Blancos won 3-0 against the newly promoted side, with Fede Valverde, Brahim Díaz and Endrick scoring the three goals.

Ayoze Pérez’s 95th minute goal downs Sevilla FC

Villarreal CF secured an impressive road win in Matchday 2, as they overcame Sevilla FC 2-1 at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán. The winner arrived in the 95th minute and it was scored by Ayoze Pérez, the former Real Betis man, making it even more painful for the Sevilla FC fans.

CD Leganés enjoy the winning feeling

Newly promoted CD Leganés have secured their first victory in Spain’s top division since their return. Playing at the Estadio Butarque against UD Las Palmas, the capital city outfit won 2-1 thanks to second-half strikes from Juan Cruz and Enric Franquesa.

Atlético de Madrid put on a show against Girona FC

Arguably the game of the weekend was Atlético de Madrid vs Girona FC, a duel between two teams who finished inside the top four last season. And, Diego Simeone’s side turned in a dominant performance, winning 3-0 at the Estadio Cívitas Metropolitano thanks to goals from Antoine Griezmann, Marcos Llorente and Koke.

Atlético de Madrid sign Conor Gallagher

There were also several transfers completed in the past week, including Atlético de Madrid’s acquisition of Conor Gallagher. The England international has arrived in Spain’s capital to bolster Diego Simeone’s midfield options, and he came on to make his debut in the second half of the team’s win over Girona FC.

Villarreal CF continue strengthening the squad

One club which has managed to sign a lot of players this summer is Villarreal CF. They have reached double digits in terms of the number of new arrivals in the squad, with the newest faces being goalkeeper Luiz Júnior, centre-back Logan Costa and striker Thierno Barry.

Real Betis take a big step towards the Conference League

In midweek, Real Betis played the first leg of their UEFA Conference League playoff round tie against Ukrainian side Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih. Manuel Pellegrini’s side won 2-0 away from home, ahead of the second leg at the Estadio Benito Villamarín this coming Thursday, with a place in the league phase up for grabs.
