What has been going on in LALIGA this past week? Here are 10 of the top stories, from a busy week of transfer business at Atlético de Madrid to the announcement of the new season’s fixture list.

With July having arrived and the summer transfer window having officially opened, there were several moves in the transfer market this past week. The LALIGA EA SPORTS and LALIGA HYPERMOTION calendars were also revealed, with all that and more discussed below. 

Álex Baena moves to Atlético de Madrid

The summer transfer window officially opened on July 1st and Atlético de Madrid have already made a major move, acquiring Álex Baena from Villarreal CF. Baena scored seven goals and assisted 10 more last season, so will bring extra firepower to Los Colchoneros’ attack. 

Atlético de Madrid acquire Matteo Ruggeri 

It has been a busy week at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, as Matteo Ruggeri has also joined Atlético de Madrid. The 22-year-old Italian joins from Atalanta and mostly plays in midfield but brings great versatility to give Diego Simeone extra options. 

Rodrigo Riquelme begins a new adventure with Real Betis

Another of the most high-profile transfers of the past week also involved Atlético de Madrid, with Rodrigo Riquelme departing the capital city club to join Real Betis. The 25-year-old arrives in Seville with experience, having played 85 LALIGA EA SPORTS matches already in his career, for Girona FC and then for Atleti. 

Salomón Rondón is back in LALIGA EA SPORTS

Several other transfers were announced over the past week, and one of the most intriguing might be Salomón Rondón’s loan move to Real Oviedo. The 35-year-old Venezuelan centre-forward is back in LALIGA EA SPORTS more than a decade after he played for Málaga CF, and brings lots of experience to the Real Oviedo dressing room. 

Nico Williams renews his contract at Athletic Club

As well as transfer news, there has been major contract renewal news this past week with Nico Williams putting pen to paper on a new deal with Athletic Club that’ll run until 2035. It’s a huge deal for the Basque institution, with one of their best players now committed to the club for the next decade.

The 2025/26 calendar is drawn

Football fans now know the order of the fixtures for the 2025/26 LALIGA EA SPORTS and LALIGA HYPERMOTION seasons. The draw for the new season’s schedule took place on July 1st, with the entire fixture list available on the LALIGA website. 

ELCLASICO will take place in October and May

There are certain fixtures that fans immediately look for when the calendar comes out, and ELCLASICO is one of them. In 2025/26, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona will first meet in Matchday 10, at the Bernabéu on the weekend of October 26th, with the return game coming on Matchday 35 in Barcelona on the weekend of May 10th.

The exact dates and kick-off times for Matchday 1 are out

The specific dates and kick-off times for the opening matchday have also been released, so we know that Girona FC vs Rayo Vallecano will be the first fixture of the new season. It’ll take place on Friday August 15th, followed by Villarreal CF vs Real Oviedo later that same evening. The opening matchday continues over the following few days, concluding with Real Madrid vs CA Osasuna on Tuesday August 19th. 

The football world mourns Diogo Jota and André Silva

There was tragic news this past week, with footballers and brothers Diogo Jota and André Silva both dying in a car crash. The international footballing community came together to pay tribute, and several Spanish clubs shared messages of consolation, including Diogo’s former club Atlético de Madrid.
